Journey To Adulthood
The Journey to Adulthood (J2A) is a complete youth ministry program of spiritual formation for 6th - 12th grades. It uses Bible study, prayer, rites of passage, outreach ministries and both serious and playful activities to underscore its core messages:
1) Manhood and womanhood are free gifts from God.
2) Adulthood must be earned.
Groups meet on Sunday morning at 9:30 am. The Journey to Adulthood Program is in its 9th year at Saint Paul's.
There are three two year segments of the program:
The first two years (6th and 7th or 7th and 8th graders) focus on celebrating the individuality of each young person and their creative potential. The Rite-13 liturgy (A celebration of Manhood and Womanhood) is the community expression of this.
The middle portion of the program (8th and 9th or 9th and 10th graders), engages youth with the skills and critical thinking involved in adulthood. The youth plan and embark on a pilgrimage together at the end of this segment. Two J2A groups have completed their pilgrimage and a third group will embark on theirs in June 2008.
The first group traveled to England and France for a 12 day pilgrimage that included Salisbury and Canterbury, the Cathedrale du Notre Dame in Rouen, Mont St. Michel, and a stay at a monastery, L'Abbaye de Saint-Wandrille. The group attended many services including Evensong, Vespers, and Compline, and learned of the many links and common traditions shared by the Anglican, Catholic and Episcopal faiths.
The second group took a 14 day pilgrimage and traveled to Ireland and Scotland. Some of the highlights of the trip included seeing the Book of Kells, Glendaloch, Newgrange, Monasterboice, a 2 day retreat on the Isle of Iona - where the Book of Kells is believed to have been written, Kilmartin Glen, and Edinburgh Castle. Pilgrims enjoyed the many inspirational sites, but also had time to pray and attend worship.
The third J2A group made their pilgrimage to England in June 2008. They saw the Magna Carta while in Salisbury and the Rosetta Stone at the British Museum in London. Pilgrims visited the ancient sites of Avebury and Stonehenge, Roman ruins in Bath, the medieval church ruins at Glastonbury, and the cathedrals of Salisbury, Wells, Coventry and Saint Paul's and Westminster in London.
Each pilgrimage is funded by the parents of the students, the students themselves and by the parish. A major part of the fund-raising activities of the J2A group is a parish-wide Mardi Gras auction.
YAC is a mentor-based program helping older teens (11th and 12th grade) to discern and carry out a ministry within their church or in the larger community.
Vocation and development of a personal credo are also emphasized.
