Confirmation
In the course of their Christian development, those baptized at an early age are expected, when they are ready and have been duly prepared, to make a mature public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their Baptism and to receive the laying on of hands by the bishop.
Those baptized as adults, unless baptized with laying on of hands by a bishop, are also expected to make a public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their Baptism in the presence of a bishop and to receive the laying on of hands.
(from The Book of Common Prayer)
As we mature in life, and in our Christian Faith, we arrive at a time when we are offered instruction that prepares us to make our mature adult public affirmation professing our faith in Jesus as the Christ. Since this is a mature adult decision, it should not be assumed, imposed, or forced on any individual. Instead of assuming a grade level or age requirement, each person should come to this decision after years of growth, study, formation, and preparation.
The Journey to Adulthood (J2A) program assists us to build community among the growing youth, and to prepare our children to become adults. This program is offered on Sunday Morning during the Formation time. Each level of the J2A program assists our youth in accepting the changes they encounter as they grow personally in community and in faith. The final stage of the J2A program is indeed called Young Adult in Church (YAC), and is the best time for them to be making many of their young adult decisions while still in the well guided environment of those who sponsored them from the beginning of their Christian life.
